Today is a big day for SparkPost, I want to share a note of gratitude and my hope for the future. 

Five years ago this month, a significant thing happened at SparkPost. We launched our first cloud product and took on the SparkPost name. At the time, we were building upon the prior 16 years of delivering the world’s premier on-premises email server to large brands and service providers under the name Message Systems. The initial goal when we launched SparkPost five years ago was simple–to provide access to the same awesome tech stack that the world’s largest senders had relied on for years, make it available to customers of any size, and allow them to take advantage of the most knowledgeable professionals to maximize the value of email. That original mission went very well, with thousands of clients signing up in the early weeks. 

2015 was a big year for us, as it also marks when we acquired Port25. That acquisition brought in a great team, technology and furthered our mission of being the provider of choice to brands and ESPs both large and small.

Over time, we recognized that sending was only part of the picture, and that companies need strong actionable insights to boost their email engagement and ROI. In 2019 we refined our mission to bring deliverability analytics and sending together. Our first launch in this new direction was our Signals product, which used the data from our vast sending network to drive machine learning models that predict engagement issues with customer emails before they ever hit send. At the end of 2019 we doubled-down on this strategy by acquiring eDataSource, whose rich panel, seed and sensor networks provide actionable insights to senders. Together we have both the broadest and deepest array of email intelligence data, giving us a unique position in the email marketplace. And on the sending side today, we send nearly 40% of the world’s commercial email–6-7 trillion emails a year. 

One of the things I’m most proud of is the positive impact we’ve had on the marketplace through the almost 1,000 people that have called SparkPost their employer at one time or another over the past two decades and the 6,000 clients we work with today. We are proud to help power the email success of organizations such as Airbnb, Zoom and several major marketing clouds including Adobe. 

Over the last couple years, we’ve accelerated our growth through assembling an amazing team, adding Rich Harris as CEO in 2018 and Hal Muchnick as CCO, and Charlie Reverte as CPO in 2019. This amazing team has given me time to reflect on both what I enjoy and where I can add the most value. I’m very excited to announce Charlie as our new CTO. I am moving to the role of Chief Evangelist, where I can bring my two decades of experience in email technology and deliverability to bear engaging more directly with our customers, partners and the market to help enable companies to be the best senders they can be. As one of the founders of Message Systems, now SparkPost, I never could have imagined the growth we’d have as a company and I am thrilled to be able to engage on a deeper level with the community we’ve built over the years. 

I’m grateful to all the employees, clients and industry friends that have supported us along the way. I can’t wait to see what the next five years will bring. Thanks for being on this journey with us.
